About the Club
Athol Carle formed the SSAA (SA) Goolwa Pistol and Shooting Club in 1976 and was its first president. At that time, the club had about 80 members. The club itself was built on a rifle range, which dates back to the 1850s. The Club has grown over the years even though it is a small club nestled in a valley near the Currency Creek Cemetery at 59 Peel Road, Currency Creek.
Currently, the club comprises a clubhouse, a 25m Rapid-fire range, a 25m/50m Precision range and Air Pistol/Air Rifle indoor shooting ranges. Metallic pistol silhouette targets are contested at 25m are also part of the program and the club offers a modified shotgun shoot every 2nd and 4th Sunday monthly.
The club also offers its members and welcomes visitors to attend the SSAA(SA) Monarto Range on the third Sunday monthly. The longer ranges and higher velocities add to the challenge.
A lot of the club and council members reside in the Fleurieu peninsula region and have brought in many new ideas. Compliance with newer act, laws, rules and regulations, however, is still vital to the club and the shooting sports.
There is friendly competitive rivalry among members within the various disciplines at the Goolwa Pistol and Shooting Club. Disciplines shot are Centrefire, Centrefire Sport, 50m Rimfire, 25m Precision, Standard Gun, Rapidfire, Air Pistol/Rifle, Centrefire Rifle (cast bullets only), Rimfire Rifle, and Black Powder Pistol and Rifle. Benchrest Pistol (one of several seasonal competitions) has recently been included in our program and is proving popular. All up, the club runs about 20 competitions.
Knowledge and advice is freely shared between all members and you don’t have to achieve at any level other than that which you wish. There are some members who are aim very high in their sport and while this is certainly respected and encouraged, the club finds that most members simply enjoy the club atmosphere and friendship of other members.
