Shooters frequenting the beautiful Yorke Peninsula in South Australia may wish to take their firearms along and visit the SSAA Moonta Club, which is situated just five kilometres from Moonta on the Moonta to Arthurton Road.
The club has three ranges, a clubhouse, toilets and a camping area. The main range is 200m and both the pistol and Rimfire/silhouette/3P range are 100m. Among the 90 members, which include 11 women and 6 Junior’s, with Hand Gun & all silhouette matches being most popular.
The club held its first annual general meeting in 1980 and only began with six members. The first president was Ken Warren.
A major focus of the club is introducing young people to the sport and fostering their skills. Currently there are four Air Rifles, two Rimfire Rifles, three Air Pistols and a Shotgun available for visitors wishing to try their hand at the sport. Junior members are important and are given any assistance possible.
Three of our Moonta members have proven to be top shots Will Godward, Brenton Pollard & Brian Trenwith.
Will has competed for Australia at World Cups & Oceania Championships & represented Australia at the 2012 London Olympics, 2016 Rio Olympic Games. He also shot the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2014 and in Brisbane in 2018.
As both a junior and senior, Brenton represented Australia in New Zealand, Germany and the USA. He was a reserve for the Sydney Olympics and served as a test shooter during the events.
Brian is a master’s grade shooter and was the four-gun winner in 1996 at the national field rifle and 3P championships. He has also represented Australia in trans-Tasman matches.
